Jurgen is an anesthesiologist (2008) and epidemiologist (2004). He studied Medicine at the University of Maastricht (1996) and obtained his PhD at the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam (2003) on the thesis entitled: “The use of microcirculatory techniques in the assessment of pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of critical limb ischemia”.  He was trained at the St. Antonius Hospital, Nieuwegein (2008) and became a staff (pediatric) anesthesiologist at the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital, University Medical Center Utrecht (2009). He was a visiting researcher at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne (2012). Since 2016 he is working at the  Erasmus Medical Center, Sophia Children’s Hospital, Rotterdam.

His research focuses on the improvement of perioperative care in children using retrospective and prospective pre- and intraoperative (database) studies. He was involved in various international multicenter research projects (NECTARINE, MPOG, PeDi-Registry, NIRS and isoelectric EEG events in infants) and Pediatric Perioperative Outcomes Group: Defining Core Outcomes for Pediatric Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine. Furthermore, he is president elect (2020 -…) and was honorary secretary (2016-2020) of the European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology (ESPA) and is part of the scientific committee since 2015. He has organized the very successful ESPA conference in 2019 in Rotterdam. He has published over 80 papers in international papers and is a regular invited speaker at national and international conferences. Furthermore, he is associate editor of Pediatric Anesthesia and a reviewer of various international scientific journals. He has received the ESA Research Support Grant 2013 and Philips Grant 2015.
